What if there's no fruit or anything around like that to attract the gnats?

  1. there are many types of gnats and fruit is not the key to what attracts them....moisture is.  Probably seeing fungus gnats from the potted plants, use a flashlight and look at the soil to see if you have them crawling around.   Some gnats can be in the "muck"of an old garbage disposal or other sink pipes.


  2. Gnats are attracted to dirt of any kind, especially that in your potted plants.  Allow the dirt to dry before re-watering, as continually wet soil will become a breeding ground.  And keep everything in your home clean and dry.

    Fruit flies, on the other hand, are attracted to many sweet, sticky substances.  If you have no fruit lying about, then check your soda bottles and cans:  make sure that they are rinsed out with clean water prior to storage.
