  1. Two ways to go about figuring this out:

    1. You can request debt validation from both agencies. Whichever one provides it is the one who legally owns the debt.

    2. You can dispute both accounts with the credit bureaus. Whichever one answers the dispute probably owns the debt. If both answer, read the instructions on the paperwork you receive from the bureau to request the documents they used to answer the dispute.

Or you could do both at the same time, I suppose.

If neither agency validates, then you don't have to pay either one of them until they do. And if they try to collect from you, wait until they try 5 times and go hire an attorney so you can sue them for $5000.00.

  2. What people don't understand is they are the collection agency...they are NOT going to give you a debt verification letter...that's like asking the theif to put your wallet back when they're done....not gonna happen. You need to have the debt validated by the credit bureau. They have 30 days in which to respond. Until then do not take any more agency calls. Just do not answer. Write both of them letters and send via registered mail a "cease and dessist" letter. Advise them they can no longer contact you by phone and in writtin (mail) only. If after you know they've received the letter and they call again report them to the FTC
