Imagine this: Our state government has decided all high school students must complete 10-15 hours of community service each week. This would be in addition to your obligations as a full time student. How would you feel if this was a true situation? Think about the pros and cons of such a requirement and decide whether you agree or disagree with a mandatory community service expectation. write as if you are seeking to persuade the governor to adopt your position.

  1. That is a lot of time for a high school student.

At Animal Control where I am the Volunteer Coordinator, we ask people to do 2 hours a week.

Community service should be a requirement for people on all public assistance. Not kids trying to finish school.

I think 2 hours a week would be nice and it would help me a lot.

  2. i would hate that. Everyday I spend seven hours in school, two in sports, one hour on my instrument. It then takes me eight hours to do my homework. Then an hour for dinner and a shower.

On average I get no more than six hours of sleep a night (sometimes less).

This is actually what my life is like.

If I need 10-15 hours a week, that is about two hours a day, plus transportation. Another two hours out of my day means no more than 4 hours for sleep. That is serious sleep deprivation.

Plus no one will gain anything from this experience if they are forced to do it. It is note volunteer work if you are required by law to do it.

  3. I think that its a wonderful idea.

However...10-15 hours a week for a child is a lot to ask of the child and the parent!

10-15 hours a month or 20 hours a semester would be more reasonable!

Community service instills a sense of value. It can showcase your talents. It pads a resume for college and for employment.

Community service also gives the person an opportunity to taste test an experience. I may think I want to be a doctor...but then I work in a nursing home and realize...that I definitely do NOT want to work with geriatrics.

Mandatory CS would give the students a fantastic experience as well as alleviate some strain on the agencies and the government funding for them.

I think its a wonderful idea...I just think 10-15 hours a week for a teenager that has school, homework, family, sports, friends, part-time job and other interests....and sleeping..is a lot to ask.

  4. i need 50 hours to graduate. i am an all A and B student. i accomplish this by staying an hour after school Monday-Thursday to help students and teachers.

it is hard work, but I've got to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!
