  1. you need a large deep barrier. you can dig a trench about 4-6 feet deep, and put wood around it, and then fill the trench with rocks and water that may block it.

  2. A barrier is the only way to contain bamboo.  Concrete is the best type of barrier, it can be a bit pricey so make sure you really like and want that bamboo.  You mention that its sprouting and I assume that this is in your yard.  Is it close to your neighbors yard because it isn't a respecter of fences.

But it sure looks nice and I hope you can work out a containment plan.

  3. I've never heard of trailing bamboo as far as I know there are 2 kinds.

    Running and clumping.

There is a common misconception that all bamboos are invasive. The fact is that there are two separate types of bamboo; running and clumping.

For the very best rhizome barrier, choose HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) of 40mm or more in thickness make sure the sides are overlapped at least 4 feet and leave 2" to 3 " above ground level.

The barriers should be from 24" to 36" wide/deep and concrete is not necessary since it can deteriorate unlike the

    the poly barriers.

    **************************NOTE********...

You only need a rhizome barrier if it's running bamboo.  Clumping may produce new shoots but it won't wind up crossing  the street to you neighbors yard.  That's a slight exaggeration....but it will cross to your next door neighbors yards.

Below is a link that shows how to install the barrier in photos

  4. If you have a trailing bamboo you will need to put in a barrier. The barrier should have no seams and go down at least 18" into the ground. Keep your barrier a couple of inches above the soil line so you can catch any runners that try to escape over the top. Trailing bamboos can sprout many feet away from the mother plant while already having sent out rhizomes many feet past that. You can usually tell if you have a trailing bamboo by the notch line that runs down the stock. If you feel that dent all the way down the plant, you have a trailing bamboo and it needs to be contained. Nothing short of digging it all out will stop it from running.
