There are often complaints that schools over-emphasize self-esteem to the point that students do not learn responsibility or aspire to be the best they can be because of an "everyone is a winner" attitude in school.

  1. I dont think that is true as children learn best by having a good role model and also to look after each other and to be kind and helpful towards each other. There are some bad points as you say but this is the most logical way of children growing up. when they're older they will understand they have to grow up. Have a good day :)

  2. Emphasizing self-esteem during school years is great and all, but it doesn't even remotely prepare a kid for real life. Kids who cry that they don't get gold stars on their homework just for doing it get a shock like jumping into freezing water when they get to a real job and don't get a pat on the head every time they do as they're expected to.

Less emphasis on self-esteem might hurt kids' attitudes in school, but it would be better for them in the long run (in my opinion).

Then again, schools are often forced to play to the lowest common denominator: the kids who really just don't care. As long as kids are raised so apathetically, little will change. My mother used to give me the third degree whenever I so much as got a B, but that just doesn't seem to happen much anymore.

  3. i do think that schools over-emphasize self-esteem to the point that students do not learn academic subjects. i think there's entirely too much emphasis on "feelings" in society at large. i think it's overanalyzing myself too much that has led to a lot of depression for me. i find that when i immerse myself in my life, with my children and family and actually focus on taking care of my responsibilities vs. focusing on what i can find that is wrong with my life, i am happier.  i had self-esteem building classes in school. didn't help me much.
