France had it's 16 Louis' with a 17th one never to be, but is that the record? Has any feudal or imperial entity ever had more rulers with the same first name?

  1. France has actually had 18 Louis, and the Papacy has had 23 Johns, but the prize goes to ...

The little German state of Reuss, which named its rulers Henry only, in honour of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII (early 14th century.  I believed they reached Henry XXXIII.

  2. I would have to say either China or Japan have had the longest running imperial/royal families. As for France having 16 Louis' they were not all from the same royal family just like all of England's Henry's were from the same family

  3. katlovr, I think that is what she means, just the names, not necessarily the same family.  You're right though, Japan has the longest continuous ruling family that is still in power.

I think the Louis would take the prize, unless you wanted to include popes, who now, at least, are technically sovereign leaders of Vatican City.  That has not always been the case, but if you wanted to count them, there have been 23 Popes John.

PS: 'Gregory'  is a distant runner-up, tieing with Louis at 16!
