Gregor Mendel was looking for reasons as to why things inherited certain traits. He was the pioneer of basic genetics and he observed how certain traits were passed down. He observed dominance, in-dominance, incomplete dominance and the rates at which all of these processes occur when certain genotypes are mixed together.

Well, to be perfectly honest, he was really only looking for more ways to get more peas from his pea pods; he just happened to stumble upon basics genetics and he studied the pea pods from there. Others went on to study the house fly and other simple species and their genetic patterns but really the entire field of genetics was initially discovered by a monk who wanted to grow more peas.
