I'm moving from Utah to Minnesota and I'm doing it on my own. I've never moved further than a few miles from where I grew up. I hope I don't forget anything important when I move, I mean financially. I need to find like a checklist or something for people about to move out of state. is there anything like that online?

  1. You need to decide how you are going to go about your move. I don't know about the job and apartment ahead of the move.  How is it possible to get a job and apartment first?  You need to save as $ much as you can. At least $1,000-$2,000 . You can have a yard sale or sale items on Ebay to help finance your move. You can eliminate what you may not be able to take with you.

You cannot get a job and apartment out there before you move to your new location.  First of all, the apartment manager would want to you to fill out an application while they run a credit check. Then, they would want to interview you.  That needs to be done in person. You may apply for jobs in other states. But, what happens when they want to interview you?  Are you ready to book an airline flight out of state, find directions to the motel, bus or rental car to the interview all on a few days notice?  Then you would have to fly back, regardless if you have been hired or not.  It is not logical or reasonable. Not to mention the tremendous amount of stress involved.

Work 2 jobs and save at least $150 a month. Open a savings account, research the internet for the place you want to move to. Talk to residents of that town or city on the internet. Find out as much as you can. (Weather, cost of living, lifestyle, population, demographics, culture, education and employment). The moving checklist will provide details of steps to be taken weekly before you move.

Your choices for transportation to your location are...

    1.  You may drive there and make at least 3 trips with all of your belongings.

    2.  Rent a uhaul truck or trailer, and haul your belongings one way.

    3.  Purchase a one way airline ticket, fly there by plane.  Take one suitcase and one carry-on bag.  Pack your belongings into boxes. Have a friend, parent or relative ship them out to you after you get your apartment. Remember to take only your clothes, shoes, important documents and books, portfolio and laptop.  You may purchase furniture and other items later. Sell your car and buy another one there after you get settled.

Stay in a motel while you look for an apartment.  After you get an apartment, you can go job hunting.  Make sure you have enough $ saved to last you as long as you think it would take to find a job.

Once settled, go to the DMV to get your new driver's license. Go to the post office and file a change of address form.

Each person moving has different needs. You can make modifications to your own situation. Good luck and email me if you have other ?'s.

  2. Hit up them exs that you have that are living there and get em to show you around

  3. Happy hunting in your new adventure from Downunder in Wonderland of OZ

  4. i think you have to get your license renewed in a new state

  5. Make sure your credit/debit card company knows you will be moving so they do not think someone else is using your card out of state. Here is a little info from a website that gives you advice you were asking for as well... http://www.lifereboot.com/2007/how-to-mo...   =) Good Luck!!

  6. First thing....MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A JOB! Sorry for the caps, but that's very important.

Make sure you have a place to stay that you can afford.  Make sure the area that you want to live in is close to work if you're moving where you won't have any family or friends to help you out if your vehicle breaks down.

Make sure to put in a change of address with the post office.  Shut off all utilities.  Put in a change of address for all your current bills.  Make sure utilities are on in the place you are moving to.

I think the USPS site might have a checklist to help.  Try looking there.
