What important towns are in between Santo Domingo and Santiago?

I was wondering because now that the capital will have a metro I was thinking it would be a great idea to construct some kind of commuter rail that connects Santo Domingo with Santiago and has stops in some important smaller towns along the way. It could look something like the MBTA commuter rail we have here in Massachusetts.
