I went to look at a rental house. No paint or carpet, just wood on walls and ceiling. The place made my eyes burn like new campers do when they are sealed up (formaldehyde there).

  1. Could be allergies, could be the place was closed up immediatly after being painted or cleaned and wasn't aired out, could be the lighting (florescent maybe) Could be various things or could be mearly coincidence, maybe your eyes were irritated the time you looked at it.

Call the owners, ask to see property documents if you are interested in the property to see if anything hazardous is there.

  2. They haven't used formaldehyde in any home construction materials in over 50 years, and it was very, very limited even then.

    So, it's not that.

There could be an allergen in the air-flow system...did the previous owners have a cat or a dog?  Are you by chance allergic to them?  If that is the case, then changing of the air filters should fix that.

  3. It may have been cleaned by using very strong chemicals, like ammonia. Try keeping the windows and doors open for a few days.
