Another word would be "promoting an idea ".  That can include changing the way they are building to preserve  green space, or getting more money for after school programs, etc.  Something you wish to "promote" to change someones ideas or turn them on to an idea.

An activist is someone who is advocating for a particular issue or position, and engages in various activities to either change laws or change behaviors -- activities include writing letters to newspapers or political office holders, protesting or marching, campaigning, calling for a boycott or for the patronizing of certain businesses, blogging, etc.

A community activist can be someone trying to reform practices in local schools, someone advocating that people and institutions clean up and stop polluting a local river, or someone trying to rally community support to prevent Wal-Mart from building in their town. They come from all parts of the political spectrum (right and left).

Activists stir things up. That is not necessarily a bad thing. It keeps things people don't want us to know about from getting swept under the rug.

Activists have a bad reputation because some of them go overboard in their efforts. Many people view activism as violent behavior, but that is not usually the case.

Activists are necessary in a free society.
