  2. The Reformation was started by Martin Luther, a German monk in the 16th century. He was protected by the north German princes who resented the authority of the Pope and the sending of German money by indulgences to built churches in Rome. The Reformation started for religious reasons but soon became a German nationist movement. Although Germany was weak and divided between hundreds of political states there was still a common feeling of "Germanness" and a shared language and culture. So most of the German princes in the north became Lutherans, followers of Martin Luther. In England, King Henry VIII for personal reasons and in order to plunder the monasteries and to make himself the head of the English church broke with Rome. In the following century the Reformation had influence on politics because of the religious wars between Protestants and Catholics. I hope that this has been a help to you.
