What influence does the mafia have on everyday life in Sicily?

I am aware that the mafia can be found all around the world but i was wondering if the mafia still effects the everyday life of the Sicilians.

The Mafia is going to have some control of some aspects of life in Italy but not so much any more.

Their are many things when I was their in the late 70's and early 80's then I would say yes but today no if their is anything it not seen and mainly underground.

a big and strong influence on the local trade, bars, restaurants and agriculture..... but the most of times nobody knows...

Many people are still "culturally submissive" infact they think that mafia is a good thing.

The mafia lives in silence feeding of ignorance, doing exortions and every illegal activities. The "pizzo" (racket) is the system the mafia uses to impose tax and bring territory under their control.In Italy there are laws that allows to free the stores and people. Lately something is changing. Some people start to think that we can do something to change the culture.

Infact if a group of stores and people denounces the mafia one, the mafia will be defeat.
