  1. Basically a background check is a list of information about an individuals past, current records, etc. There are tons of records and information on a person based on their background check. Yes, you do have the right to know what is on somebody's background check, as they are all public records.

Yes - you can also pay for your own background check. I recommend http://www.v1g.org because you only have to pay once, and you can do unlimited searches not only on yourself, but other people. Its 100% legal, and 100% confidential. The site also has a FAQ page that can answer more questions. I can also help as well, just shoot me a message :)

  2. Background checks for employment purposes can range in the types of specific information obtained.  If you have applied for a job and signed a background authorization form, the employer or a company the employer hires can check just about anything they wish, as you have given them permission with your signature.

Yes, you are able to request a copy of the background check conducted on you if it was for employment purposes.  The law is called the Fair Credit Reporting Act and it requires a Consumer Reporting Agency to give you a copy of the report compiled on you with a written request.

Generally, companies do not conduct a full background check for personal reasons.  You can get a criminal check on line, but usually not the full background check.
