27 years ago I stole some beer. I crackedthe lock on an outdoor cooler and took a couple of cases of beer. I drove back and forth in front of the store drinking the beer and throwing out the cans. I was 18. Yeah a stupid thing to do. I pled guilt to petty larceny. 225 hours community service. $85 fine. I joined the military. No problems. Fought in a war and was honorably discharged. So, recently I applied for a work visa in a foreign country. They obtained a record from the State Department and this charge was on there. It was the lowest class of a misdemeanor you can have. Why do they maintain this? Is this petty offense on the NCIC record forever? I thought about applying to have it reduced. Would that make it fall off the record?

  1. Any crime you committed as an adult will be on your record forever unless you can get a judge to have it taken off.

Thanks for your service, but it doesn't erase your record.

  2. J K is right.  It's always there, unless you apply to have it expunged, which would make it no longer accessible to the public.  You can't have it reduced after there's already a disposition.
