What ingredients do you use to clean painted wood furniture and varnished furniture

i am looking for very simple ingredients for eg i dont have linseed oil and such

  1. I use three different things:

    1) Dawn and water -- this cleans most ordinary soils and stains

    2) VM&P Naphtha to remove greasy stains and waxes.  Mineral spirits is a slower drying alternative.  Both are paint thinners that you can find in any paint store or department.

    3) Furniture cleaning wipes -- a strong detergent cleaner that is very effective at removing smoke and grease, including tobacco smoke residues.  One of the two ingredients in this is also in Formula 409, so I would consider that an alternative.

    Do not use linseed oil -- it is not a cleaner.


  2. I would use a 50/50 mix of distilled white vinegar and water. Works great for me.
