I have a 2 year old toy poodle. I am very weary of letting her outside without a leash either when we are at home in California or at our summer house in Maine. I'd like to know what insects/spiders/small animals can kill a dog via biting or venom?

I know the obvious coyotes, mountain lions, etc. but I want to know more along the lines of Black Widows, Brown Recluses, Scorpions, etc. All of these are very dangerous to humans, but then again, some poisons only affect humans and not animals, and vice versa. So which will hurt my little puppy?

Thanks a lot.

  1. Other than fleas and tics, most insects/spiders are not going to go to all the trouble getting through the dogs coat in order to bite.  The nose stuck where it doesn't belong and the ears are the only likely targets for insects/spiders to give a quick bite or sting.  You should talk to your vet about your concern and I am sure he will tell you the incidence of fatal bites in each area is nearly non-existent.

  2. Snakes, and Chupacabras

  3. chupacabras only kill goats but anyway heartworms can kill a dog
