  1. Learning to read music for guitar won't hurt your guitar playing.  Even after you learn to read, you can still play guitar by ear and improvise all you want, its just another tool in your bag of tricks, so to speak, that you can use or not.

It seems a bit silly to me to take up a new instrument just to learn to read music. If you love guitar, then why waste your time learning another instrument, unless you really want to?

  2. Piano. It's simple to learn and soon enough you get really because it is easy to understand.

To start with all you need to know are the notes until you can start learning simple melodies.

Then once you get the grip of it you can start expanding on what you know, do chords and create your own things.

From that you can begin to understand other instruments like guitar, you'll know what each note on each fret it.

It's never as complex to learn as what it sounds an looks unless you make it complex.

Or drumming has something quite simple to it if you can co-ordinate your hands and feet at different times. Just by starting of with a simple beat or some random beats you can expand until you can make recognisable drumbeats and follow along to music.

  3. Maybe try bass...either upright or electric. When tuned standard, bass uses EADG strings (same as standard) guitar. You'll strengthen your hands and learn more about the leads or rhythms you play when you play guitar. Bass can be used in a rock band, jazz band, or an orchestra, so it's pretty versatile. Hope this helps!

  4. If you want to learn a new instrument then I would most definately learn the piano! Start now as you will regret itin the future! You can do anything related to music with a piano! And also it would be the best thing for your reading! Also once you have learn how to read music, and played piano for a while you have a much better understanding of basic theory, and chords and scales etc. This will all help your guitar playing! Also learning to read music doesn't have to be for guitar, but once you can read it you could then use scales to transfer it onto your guitar! IT could only help your guitar playing and make it even better. You can still be free with your guitar playing....well if keep it free.

  5. If your main issue is learning music, then just learn the music.  Music notes are going to be the same regardless of the instrument.  If you like the guitar then stick with it.

Look at it another way.  You are happy now just playing what ever on the guitar.  You could do the same thing with other instruments too.

But if you feel that you must go to another instrument to learn music at the expense of the guitar I would say try either the piano or the trumpet.

  6. try the trombone. its really easy. theres 7 posisions and theres a couple notes for each one. you can fix notes easily by adjusting your lips and your slide. it may take a little while to figure it out but its really easy. its honostly a lot easier then something like the sax or the trumpet.

  7. You asked what instrument you should take up then in the end you said that you don't want take take up another instrument? :-/

You know guitar so learn how to read music on that. It's no big deal and will be really useful. Just because you learn how to read music on a particular instrument doesn't restrict your freedom to improvise and jam on it.

  8. I play piano from mostly fake book music, you know, melody line and accomp. chords. Improvising the chords is fun, and if you know the sound of the orig. arrangement, you can do the same. When a certain arrangement works, I make notes on the music that looks like the arrangement. Frequently the quality of the arrangement depends on faithfully simulating the provided chords.

I like to say that I play piano, and I don't have to carry it on my back.

  9. try a sax, there as fun as balls and actualy pretty frigin easy to learn
