What instrument to play?

Question

I'm going to learn an instrument. I want an instrument that's import and used in many different kinds of music. Probably one that plays the melody of the music, or drums. What would you recommend? Not piano though.

For melody I woulod say bass or guitar. As a guitarist myself, i find it a very rewarding instrument to know how to play. But with bass, you are the man rythem behind the rest of the band and it is a great melody instrument. Plus it is fun to write basslines for songs.

Try the oboe!  It usually has the melody.  That or the flute...

I would say sax.  I play it in our school band and in the jazz band.  Plus, it plays melody a lot of the time.

I play the trumpet. it often has the medody. and they are very eassy to play and make a sound with unlike flute, clarinet or oboe. I have played jazz, Classical and all types of music on my insturment. And just to let you know., brass is winds.

I would recommend the trumpet, french horn, or clarinet.  What's interesting about the trumpet and clarinet sections is that they are divided into 3 parts, so they produce some nice harmonies.  Clarinets can play in bands and orchestras, and trumpets can play in jazz bands in addition to bands and orchestras.  The saxophone is another versatile instrument, but I'd advise against choosing it because there are too many saxes in bands, which offsets the balance of instruments.  So, my first choice would be the trumpet, because bands often lack brass instruments and you could switch to the french horn, baritone, trombone, or tuba.  You should also consider the french horn, which gets melodies often also.  It's also an instrument that many bands lack.

flute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... it is very fun to play, and i learned it fairly quickly. it plays the melody in most songs ive played.

i'd say guitar, lot's of people play it. There are many places to learn to play it and it has a great sound (when you can play it!!)
