I'm writing out something on the computer but don't have an Alto Flute option to help transpose. Is there another instrument in G that I can reference to in order to transpose correctly?

  1. What are you using, Notepad?  Because Sibelius and Finale will do this.  Otherwise, your options are limited.  Cheap programs do not have all the transposition options of the higher-end ones - sorry.

  2. Well, there's the Tumpet in G and Horn in G- both of which are more rare that the alto flute, so you will most likely not have these options either.

You're just going to have to transpose it yourself... it sounds a Perfect Fourth lower than concert pitch... so if a regular flute plays a "C", the alto flute will SOUND as a "G", lower than the "C".

It may make more sense to take it up a perfect Fifth, then drop the octave.  Remember to check the key signature... if you want a sounding "B", you would write an "F#"... an "F natural" would be a b5, not a P5.

Here's a link to a great site that tells you the transposition and range for most instruments (and subgroups).

Hope this helped, and have fun writing! :)

  3. I suggest that you write the music for the alto flute in a different clef and then find someone who is experienced enough to transpose the music

    just a thought
