What insurance do I have against a courier delivery?

I have had a well known courier deliver a parcel, the first parcel was damaged and I had to order a replacement part, they have now delivered the replacement, but i had to refuse the delivery due to not been able to check the parcel, the courier would not allow me to open the parcel until signed for.

But how do I know if the parcel is damaged before i sign as i cant open? and if i sign for the parcel and the item is broken what right do i have to claim compensation?

It seems like I will have to sign for a potentially broken package.

  1. You don' know it's damaged, until/unless you open it.

You can't claim compensation, unless the package is insured against damage.  If it IS insured against damage, the SENDER is the one who must file the claim.

  2. Unless the you or the sender purchased insurance, then the courier is not liable for damage, per the terms of service that apply for every customer.

If you want more detail, go to the courier's website and look up their terms of service.  It spells out what they are liable for and what they are not.

The only way to know whether the items came damaged is to sign for the package and open it.  If it is damage, then it is between you and the sernder, not the courier.
