  3. During the middle ages the  Dukes of Burgundy became so rich and so powerful that they rivaled the King of France who was both a blood relative and theoretically their feudal overlord.

They acquired lands in addition to the present day Burgundy and controlled a long corridor stretching from modern day Belgium to Switzerland and Northern Italy. They thus had a trade route which linked the North Sea to the Mediterranean.

They maintained their more or less independant status by switching alliances between the King of France  and the King of England (who also claimed the throne of France). Their actions helped prolong the battles between the French and English kings into what is known as the Hundred Years War.

It was the Burgundians who, in 1430, captured Joan of Arc and turned her over to the English who burned her at the stake.

In 1477 the last duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold,  was killed in a battle with the Swiss. He was said to have been split open from his head to his hips by one blow from a Swiss halbardier when his army was ambushed  in a mountain pass.
