It was AM (amplitude modulation) radio. Although invented before the 1920s it was adapted in the 1920s to commercial use.

Up till then radio was used to transmit information between two or more points, such as from a ship to another ship. However some got the idea of 'broadcasting' that is, sending their message out to whomever wanted to listen.
