What is, or how would I find out, the ratio between people of different ages in different countries and eras?

Really, I'm just trying to find an semi-accurate avarage percentage of a population capable of working, say the ratio of those under 14, to those 14 and older. I would like to find an avarage that would work for any era, from ancient times to modern. It doesn't have to be perfect, just in the ball-park, as I am using it for a game, but I would like it to be as accurate as possible in order to keep the game realistic.

Any statistic for any place, nation, or time period would be a help! Thanks and God bless!

BTW- I am only taking into account children too young to do much work, NOT the elderly, infirm, or unemploied. I have another game variable that takes care of these.

  1. try the library for books on the industrial revolution and child labor.

or UN stats report - ILO reports may glean some history. UNESCO / unicef may hv snippets.

usa annual report on human rights by state dept will add on.

the industrial revolution spurrred child protection laws.

the % is rather small - less than 1% of total labour
