  7. "Do You Hear What I Hear"

Partly because I love the message of hope and the promise.  But mostly because it's attached to my fondest childhood memory.  I played Mary in our 5th grade Christmas play and wasn't allowed to sing along.  I just remember there being only me and the baby.  All I could do was hold him, look in his eyes, and cry.  It was perfect!

  11. 12 days of christmas

    Symbolic interpretation

Some Christians assign symbolism to the gifts in the song. One of the most common versions of these assigned meanings is:

The 'partridge in a pear tree' means there is only one God and is also symbolic of Jesus (see Luke 13:34).

The 'two turtle doves' are the Old and New Testaments. Though according to Zondervan's Twelve Days of Christmas the story behind a favorite Christmas song this is the 2 turtle doves sacrificed that Joseph and Mary brought when they presented Jesus at the Temple.

The 'three French hens' are the three Persons of the holy Trinity or the three virtues: faith, hope, and love, though according to Ace Collins' book "Stories of the Best Loved Christmas Songs", they represent the expensive gifts of the Wise Men: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The 'four calling birds' are the Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; or their Gospels. Which makes sense because they are "calling" out the story.

'Five gold rings' are the first five books of the Bible, or the Pentateuch.

'Six geese a-laying' refer to the six days of the Creation.

'Seven swans a-swimming' are the seven sacraments and the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

'Eight maids a-milking' are the eight Beatitudes.

'Nine ladies dancing' are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.

'Ten lords a-leaping' are the Ten Commandments.

'Eleven pipers piping' are the eleven faithful Apostles.

'Twelve drummers drumming' are the twelve doctrines in the Apostles' Creed.

  20. Christmas in our Hearts by Jose Mari Chan.  I first heard the song in my elementary years and its simple but just as powerfully striking lyrics really struck a chord in me.

Here's the lyrics.  Isn't it very poignant and meaningful?

Whenever I see girls and boys

    selling lanterns on the streets

    i remember the Child

in the manger as He sleeps

    wherever there are people

    giving gifts, exchanging cards

    i believe that Christmas

    is truly in their hearts

    [refrain]

    Let’s light our Christmas trees

    for a bright tomorrow

    where nations are at peace

and all are one in God

    [chorus]

    Let’s sing Merry Christmas

    and a happy holiday

this season, may we never forget

the love we have for Jesus

let Him be the One to guide us

    as another new year starts

and may the spirit of Christmas

    be always in our hearts

In every prayer and every song

    the community unites

    celebrating the birth

    of our Savior, Jesus Christ

    let love, like that starlight

    on that first Christmas morn

lead us back to the manger

where Christ the Child was born

    So, come let us rejoice

come and sing a Christmas carol

    with one big joyful voice

proclaim the name of the Lord!

    [repeat chorus 2x]

    Be always in our hearts
