I'd like to make an American cake recipe that calls for 1/3 half n half. I understand that half n half is an ingredient that you can get in America which I can substitute here in the UK for half cream and half milk, but I don't understand what a 1/3 is in metric so I can measure half milk and half cream. A third of what? A cup, a litre etc.

Thanks in advance

  1. Hi there..

Half n Half is just a name given to a milk product over here with half milk half cream in it. Back home in NZ, we had homogenized milk which was creamier (used alot more for coffees) and pasteurized milk which is  much thinner. The homogenized version back home is about the same as half n half here in the states. I believe UK has the same type of milk products. Now when a recipe calls for 1/3 in american terms it refers to 1/3 of a cup unless it specifies 1/3 of a litre.

    Hope this helps.

  2. If it's an American recipe then it would be 1/3 cup.

  3. It looks like you recipe may be missing the unit of measure. I wouldn't venture to guess what that is for fear of ruining your recipe. :)

Half and half is typically sold in pint (2 cup), and quart (4 cup) sized cartons, if that helps.

Looking at the recipe it appears to be 1/3 cup. I think someone stated that in the comments below the recipe. A little unconventional detective work. :)

  4. I don't have a way of being sure but I think it must mean 1/3 cup of half and half.  1/3 would be .333* of anything.  I don't think this is much help but if you want to post the name and some details of the recipe I would be glad to look for another version and see if the amount looks right for you.
