I think the tank I have is a 5 gallon, although I'm not sure. (I found it in my basement.)

My betta currently lives in a 1/2 tank, so...you know...I kinda wanna move it.

But is there a small fish that will live along with my betta?

  1. Some good tank mates for Betta fish are: platy, rasbora, white cloud minnow, plecos, corydoras, plecostomus, neon tetras, oto and cory cats.

    hope that helped! :-)

  2. Betta's should be kept alone. i used to have one but he died. 1 fish can live with him. a girl Betta. unless you want guppies. if its a girl Betta then i have no idea. you should go to your locals pet store and ask the person in charge of the fish. hope this helps!

  4. hey well a lot of people say that 5 gallons is perfect for a betta, and should be kept alone with no other tank mates. it is a common missconception that bettas are killers that will kill anything and everything in a tank, which is false. It is true that u cant keep them with other males, and if the tank is too small, not even females. THey can actually be a nice addition to a community tank, just dont keep them with fin nippers (such as barbs) and/or with fish of the same family (aka gouramis of any kind), because they will get territorial. another type of fish that you should keep away from your betta is anything that is the same general color and a any fish that has wavy or long fins, because in this case they will feel threatened and may become agressive. So if u stay away from the fish i just described, they can go with a variety of peacefull small community fish. If your tank IS a 5 gallon ( i would check that out for usre), you could have a small group of corys for the bottom, and maybe some peaceful tetras that will not bother him (like neons or cardinals, or rummy nose tetras)(stay away from blackskirts and serpaes, because they have been known to be fin nippers). If u dont want tetras, u could go for some smaller danios (not he long finned ones) .  other fish you could have are platys and mollies, but i think they are boring haha. I hope i have given you some advice to work with, and make sure your 5 gallon tank is filtered and heated if u want to keep anything with your betta. good luck with it

  5. Tetra's. Any small fish that can live in a freshwater tank with a low, smooth flow -- from a filter if you have one. With short, not too flowy tails.

  6. There's lots of fish that will go along well with bettas.  Contrary to what most people think, bettas are not evil fish killers......Most of the community fish will do fine, with the exception of some fin nippers-like tiger barbs.  The problem though, is most of those fish are schooling fish, and do best in groups of around 5+, and with your tank only being (possibly) a 5 gallon, I wouldn't recommend it.

Assuming the tank also has a filter, you could try adding an African dwarf frog with the betta, and a mystery snail.  Maybe a few ghost shrimp-but not with the frog in there.

  7. bettas should be kept alone, they are very territorial and if u put another fish in there he could bite the bettas long fins

  8. Some betta's live fine with other fish and some are very territiorial and don't tolerate others at all.  Until you put them with other fish you won't know unless you buy one that is already living in a community tank.

If they tolerate other fish then get something smaller without flowing fins.  Tetra's are fine but really need to be in a school of six which is too many fish for your tank.  Actually a betta in a 5 gallon is almost at the limit anyway.  Maybe a couple cory cats to clean up?
