  1. p means progresive, i means interwine or something but p is better

  2. Mostly the TV guy is correct.

    1080p = 1920x1080 progressive (30 full frames per second)

    1080i = 1920x1080 interlaced (30 half frames per second)

    Technically, it takes 1/15th of a second to get the whole picture, however most new TV's have the processing in them to make it look as good as "p" anyway.  Also, very little source material is "p" yet; example: over the air broadcast are either 720p or 1080i.

  3. 1080p is in progressive scan which will produce a better picture than 1080i.

  4. It doesn't mean a d**n thing anymore...both are signal types.

    But the TV doesn't care if it's 1080i or 1080p or 720p....all signals are converted to the <<SAME format>> and delivered to the display panel 30 times a second...so the SIGNAL CONVERSION IS DIFFERENT, But the TV delivers the picture exactly the same way in ALL FORMATS.....

    So no matter what signal you feed it, it will deliver ALL the signals to the display the SAME WAY.....

    Back when we had CRT projection units around, they did have an effect on the picture. But LCD's, DLPs, Plasma....all of them aren't affected....

    So get the 1080P TV sets for the highest resolution display panel available....

  5. the number refers to the number of vertical lines in the image so there are 1080 lines and the i/p stands for progressive and interlaced Progressice shows everyline at once while Interlaced only shows half of the lines at a time alternating between them. its fast enough that the human eye can't really tell but many times there is a difference in favor of progressive. Alot of dvd players have progressive as an option and some channels broadcastin progressive as well

    example: the standard broadcast of american tvs (before the digital upgrade in febuary) is 480i and HD is typically 720p or 1080i/p

    So basicly progressive provides a better quality but not in resolution
