  1. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. During history when all countries were searching desperately for a way to tell time accurately at sea so sailors could navigate the seas safely and accuratley, many observatories were set up.

Greenwich is the site of the United Kingdoms Royal Observatory and Roayl Astromer were given the difficult task of deciding how best to determine the correct tiem at sea. Many people believed the only way was to use the stars as a guide. However some believe the making of an accurate time keeper (or clock) was the answer.

In short the world accepted a clock design by Harrison which was used on many of Captain Cooks voyages around the world, and along with the astromers calculations of mapping the stars. Since most of the work was decision making was made at Greenwich in England, it was decided that time should be measured from this point.

Whilst this was not immediately accepted by many countries it is now seen as the point from which time starts, and all time from that point is measured in degrees.

10 am GMT means that it is the 'true' ten o'clock in the morning.

    Hope this helps
