From what I have read the short lil tank on my barbeque is a high pressure tank with the regulator knocking that pressure down for use by the barbie. My questions are

1.What is considered 'High Pressure", how many psig ?

2.For use at the barbie.. what does the pressure regulator knock the high pressure down to?

  1. High  pressure simply refers to tank pressure. That varies with the temperature of the propane in it. at 70 degrees fahrenheit the pressure would be about 127 psi. On a really hot day that pressure could be as much as 200psi. If you get down to -44 degrees there is no pressure in there at all!

The regulator on a bbq is what we call a single stage regulator. It takes tank pressure, regardless of what it is, and drops it down to 11" of water column, which is the operating pressure of the appliance. This is roughly 1/2 psi.

On houses, we typically install 2 regulators. The first one at the tank drops the pressure to 10psi, then we run the line over to the house and the second stage regulator takes the 10psi and drops it to 11"wc...
