  2. I'll jump in here despite what's already been said and state categorically that ctfmon IS to do with Microsoft Office and is NOT a virus, as I have seen sites say, that I would expect to know better.

I have installed Office on various computers and ctfmon ALWAYS follows these installations and I have never seen it on a computer that doesn't have Office on it.  That doesn't mean that someone won't write a virus (or has and I haven't yet seen it) that calls itself ctfmon but the instances I saw on the sites that should have known better were obviously because they had Microsoft Office.

So any information posted here that says ctfmon is a virus should be regarded cautiously, to say the least.

And hats off to the ones who correctly link it to Office.

  4. What Is the Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon.exe) File?

Ctfmon.exe activates the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar.

What Does the Ctfmon.exe File Do?

Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies.

Can I Remove the Ctfmon.exe File?

Removing the Ctfmon.exe might cause problematic behavior in your Office XP programs, so removing it is not recommended.
