    0*8 + 1*4 + 1*2 + 1*1 = 7


  2. BCD encodes each decimal digit as a four-digit binary sequence.  The representations are: 0=0000, 1=0001, 2=0010, 3=0011, 4=0100, 5=0101, 6=0110, 7=0111, 8=1000, 9=1001.  Therefore 47=01000111.

    It should be noted that BCD speeds decimal calculation at the expense of hardware complexity and is very rarely used any more.
