times * 5,000 = $350 tax.

Same works if you are figuring out a discount...If it was a 25% discount off of an $18 item you would say .25*18=4.50...but since it's a discount and not a tax, then you would subract $4.50 from the original price to get the discount.

The way I do it is to figure what 1 percent is firs.

1 percent of $5,000.00 is $50.00.  The compute 1 percent move the decimal point 2 positions to the left.

Then I times the 1 percent answer by 7, $350.00

figuring 10 per cent of a number is easy just move the decimal poing 1 position to the left, $500.00 so we already know the 7 percent answer has to be less than the 10 percent amount.  This is a good quick little check.
