The caliper is a cast iron assembly that goes over your brake rotor, holding your brake pads in place and housing the cylinder that is forced out to put pressure on your brake pads whenever you press the brakes. Though they are usually quite easy to replace they can get very expensive depending on the car type

  4. The brake calliper (or "caliper" in the US) is basically the assembly that holds the brake pads and the pistons that apply pressure to the pads to push them onto the discs to slow the car down.  Essentially it's just a shaped or cast lump of metal.

  5. I think you mean caliper.  Calipers are part of the braking system, they put pressure on the brake pads against the rotor to make the car stop.
