  1. John Smith, R-Ill.,

    Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.,

    Sen Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.,

    Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.,

    Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.,

Some publications use them, but there are no parentheses in the style guide. Look under, "party affiliations."

  2. The later John Smith (R) then add the state

    ie.

    Gov. John Smith, (R-Virginia)

    Sen. John Smith, (R-Ariz.)

    Rep. John Smith, (R-Calif.)
