API stands for Application Programming Interface it is a set of functions that can be called from an application program to access features of another program.

Google has an API, so does Yahoo, eBay, and many other websites that allow you to connect to and interact with functions of that particular website.

To expand on Chris' answer, a given API usually consists of a number of prepackaged functions. I have no idea what the API functions might be named in Google's case, but I imagine there are some to place a Google map widget on a webpage and make it work just as one example.
