  1. Israa is where the Prophet was taken by night from Mecca to Jerusalem, he prayed as Imam with all the other Prophets.

    Miiraj is when the prophet ascended to the sky on a creature called "Borakk" the Prophet described that creature as bigger than a mule and smaller than a horse, it puts its next step as far as it can see (very very fast).

    the Prophet ascended on that creature Physically and passed through every sky from 1 to 7, and on every one he met a Prophet like Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Idriss... and was greeted by them all.

    he arrived at a place called "sidrat al mountaha" translation "xxxx of infinity" (i don't know the first word in English its something like a tree), and there he was given orders to pray 5 times a day.

    Israa and Miiraj are one of the Prophets miracles given to him by God.

    @Asker

    be carful with what some of the posters here say, ALL MUSLIMS everywhere acknowledge the fact that the Prophet went Physically, that's why it is a Miracle and that's why he used a transport and that's what he said, every Quran and hadith book says that. but some of those deviant sects invented and still inventing their own religions and own beliefs, and therefore excluded themselves from the Muslim community. so don't listen to them and read books instead.

    every one of em is using a counterfeit hadith to arrive at their means.

    @the1qfactor is claiming that the Prophet was just dreaming, because he believes that some idiot in India is Jesus and he is a prophet too, and because his idiot cant perform any miracles, he is trying to prove that it never append for the real Prophet too...

    @I love skiing,

    is trying to make you believe that Hassan and Hussain should have been Khaliphs after Ali after the Prophet...

    whatever...

    so as you can see, none of em is giving you a straight answer, but both are trying to make you believe something... very weird people.

  2. Al-Isra wa Al-Miraj is the journey where the Prophet (PBUH) went to Jerusalem from Mekka in one night. There He performed Salah in the Masjid Al-Aqsa with past prophets. After that he stood on the rock (which is now being housed in the Dome of the Rock) and was taken on a creature up to heaven. there he was told that we (Muslims) had to pray 50 times. then on his way down Moses PBUH told him 50 times is too much, so Prophet Muhammad PBUH went back and forth to Allah until it was down to just 5 times.

    This is why this is significant to Muslims, and why Muslims are attached to Jerusalem

  3. Those both might be one thing and I know little about Al-Me-raj.

    Night of thee 27th Rajab Almurajjab.

    The night is when Rasool Allah(sawaw) went to the journey of heavens and met some of the prophets. It was the same journey of heavens when Rasool Allah(sawaw) saw two gemstones; green and red, in the heavens and asked Gabriel what they symbolized, Gabriel then said they were for Imam Hassan(as) and Imam Hussein(as). When Prophet(sawaw) asked the reason for difference of colors...Gabriel then said the colors symbolized their ways of martyrdom.

  4. it was a spiritual journey,

  5. Al Miraj is the night the Prophet (sa) had a spiritual vision where he went to heaven and met with prophets who had died before him.  It is also known as the Night Journey.

    Some understand this to be literal but upon reflection of the Qur'an and Hadeeth, it is clear that this was a spiritual journey.

    EDIT:

    @Sami - Dear friend, I do not believe the Prophet's(sa) vision was a dream because I have recognized Imam Mahdi and Messih.  I believe he was sleeping because the Hadeeth and the Qur'an testify to this.  The Qur'an (17:94) makes it clear that the Prophet (sa) cannot physically ascend, while the Hadeeth ends with "and then the Prophet(sa) woke up" showing that he was sleeping the whole time.

    But even the Hadeeth aside, if the Qur'an is telling us that the Prophet (sa) cannot physically ascend to heaven, then on what grounds do we dare take a Hadeeth with more authority than the Qur'an.  I hope that helps explain my dear friend.
