  1. Antigua Guatemala (commonly referred to as just Antigua or La Antigua) is a city in the central mountains of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish New World Baroque architecture as well as a number of spectacular ruined churches. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Antigua Guatemala serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name. It also serves as the departmental capital of Sacatepéquez

  2. Antigua is a mixture of great places for sightseeing, and food. However, there are extremely poor people living nearby. The people are warm and friendly, especially if you show an interest into their culture.

  3. Antigua was the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala from around 1521 until 1773. There are actually 3 volcanoes near the city, Agua, Fuego, and Pacaya. They do occasionally rumble and burp. Some of the Spanish Colonial architecture has been restored. The Mayan craftsmanship is amazing! The central park was once a beautiful place to hang out, until the business interests ran the indigenous vendors out of town, in 2003. Now you only see indigenous people in the market area. It is still a good place to learn Spanish, with about 200 schools in town.

The are some very nice hotels and restaurants. Antigua seems to be Guatemala's only successful use of zoning laws. It really does seem like going into a time machine. It is easily accessible from the international airport in Guatemala City, and is a good place for an (expensive) overnight stop, on the way to the real Guatemala. You can see about 600 Antigua photos at http://www.atitlan.net/riegel/ .

  4. Antigua is a colonial city about 30 minutes from the capital, Guatemala City.  The city is beautiful and has a volcano towering over the city.  I've attached a few websites about Antigua.  The Antigua daily photo page gives you sights from around the city and the webpage owner Rudy Giron is very nice and will communicate with you if you have any questions.  He currently lives in Antigua.  I hope this helps.
