What is BD live? Is it really needed? Can I just watch movies if my player don't have it?

BD live just enables some extra content that is accessed through the internet. That content might include stuff like games or merchandising or up and coming movie trailers. The big draw of BD Live is that content could change over time, where as the stuff on the disc will not.

In my experience it's not a big deal. The developers haven't really honed their skills yet. In the future that may change though and there might be some interesting stuff.

You can of course watch a Bluray movie that has BD Live features without having a BD Live capable player. You just won't be able to access the BD Live content.
