I had been asked to complete a section of background research behind the theory behind my investigation for a science experiment report. However, I wasn't given any information on the specific things I was supposed to write in it.

  1. What has been written about the topic you have been investigating? Most of the time, you have already read the literature before doing the experiment.

While googling may be acceptable for a report in primary school or even in some secondary ones, you should really go to the scientific journals to learn about what has been done.

  2. The background is the current understanding of the topic you are investigating.   From the background you would form a hypothesis as to the outcome of a an experiment.  In short, it is what is known about your subject that you intend to verify with your experiment.

  3. First of all, depending on your topic, this varies. If i were you, i would google your subject or go to wikipedia to find basic information on the project. I would then summarize the important facts: basic background, important milestones, people involved, etc. Basically, in a few sentences/paragraphs if needed, explain your subject as if your reader has no idea what you are researching about.
