  1. Your question is a very good one! I have many, many Chinese pen-pals that write to me assuring that Beijing is being prepped for the Olympics even as we speak. They say that massive cleaning efforts are underway, both for air pollution and littering pollution. The Chinese are very proud of their country, and want to make it the best place possible for the Olympians in whatever way they can. I also found an article about what they are doing to try to clean the air in Beijing. Here it is: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/29/world/...  It may be a little old, but I think it provides the information you are looking for.

  2. I heard that, Beijing is going to make drastic changes in their behavior of polluting atmosphere. They are going to shut the air polluting industries located near the Olympic site during the course of game, not to affect the clean flavor of the game.

The worrisome factor is, after the completion of the Olympic game the same polluted industries will be reopened to pollute the atmosphere, aggravating global warming.

My question is, when Beijing and other emerging economy (newly industrialized countries) like India, Russia etc., will show some responsibility towards creating greener environment? Can they make their coal-fired power plants more eco-friendly and pollution-free industry, by using green coal (clean coal) technology?

When these newly industrialized countries start using green coal (clean coal) technology for their power plant in a big way? Or, use nuclear power for producing their energy requirement in a big way?

I feel, using green coal or nuclear power in a big way is the only way to make our environment clean; other than using renewable energy sources for power generation. At present, our full requirement of power can not be met by using only renewable energy sources.
