  1. I trained with a Korean in the US, then I went to Korea specifically for Tae Kwon Do and I was quite disappointed with what was available near Tongduchon.

The instructor on the Army base was a joke, giving out black belts in 1 year.  Lucky I already had 7 years of martial arts and knew better.  The instructors off base spoke no English, and when I got a translator to go with me, they really were not very interested.

I ended up training with an American that had lived in Korea since 1988 (I was there in 1991) and we entered joint Korean army/US Army tournaments together.  It ended up being a great experience, but not like the foreign master I was expecting.  I also trained with Thai master in the US.

Here I train under a Korean, and he is the best master I've every had.  I don't think you need to go to Asia to find a good instructor.  There are plenty of Asians here, as well as qualified American instructors.

I have also been to Japan as a civilian, and my only advice here is that you can expect to need alot of money (Japan is a very expensive place to live) and also expect subservience.  They are not interested in what you already know, or your opinion, they are only interested in teaching you what they know.  It is very easy for an American to accidentally insult/dishonor a Japanese master.
