  1. Blue-ray is the next gen DVD which plays on HDTVS. The laser is much stronger to

  2. If you are considering buying one you know what it is. For all the details you need see the link.

But before you buy consider a few things.

First you need an HDTV (or HD projector and screen) to benefit, and to get optimum benefit need a moderate to large size 1080p display watched at optimum distance (generally closer than most people watch), and a good surround sound system.

You will still benefit with a smaller 720p HDTV but will not see a great improvement over an upconverted DVD.

You also need to recognize that Blu-ray disks are more expensive than DVDs ($5-$20 more!) and the choice of movies is fairly limited so far (about 500 vs 83,000 DVDs).

That all said, Blu-ray is capable of wonderful video and sound ... but be cautioned that the difference between Blu-ray and upconverted DVD are NOT "night and day" in most cases --- despite what many people here will tell you --- so have realistic expectations. Have a look at the images at the 2nd link to see the quality difference between Blu-ray and DVD.

The only Blu-ray player recommended right now is the PS3.

This isn't the best time to buy into Blu-ray. So, my recommendation is to take the time to get a demo on an HDTV similar to what you will be using (same size and resolution) and watch both a DVD and a BLu-ray disk at the same distance as you would use at home. Then decide if the cost is worthwhile to you.

If the extra costs are worth it to you, consider whether you want to buy now, or wait until Xmas when prices of players are expected to be about 50% of current prices, more movies will be available, and prices for disks might be lower.

Finally, keep in mind that Blu-ray isn't likely to replace DVD. For most people upconverted DVDs, HD video on demand and, in the longer term, various forms of downloadable HD video are expected to be the preferred media.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

The Blue Ray is better than hd player......It has better titles.....and there is a Sony which is like $400 bucks really affordable compare to HD DVD players...

  4. Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is an optical disc storage media format. Its main uses are high-definition video and data storage. The disc has the same dimensions as a standard DVD or CD.The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost six times the capacity of a dual layer DVD.

  5. It is a much better quality of DVD player than your normal average one. Honestly take it from me, you can tell the difference with a HD TV. Very crisp picture and detail.

  6. A bunch of over-priced c**p...
