What is CLKUP?

Question

I know what it stands for, Computer-Controlled Continuously Variable Lockup, but that means nothing to me. Can anyone describe what it does? It is a characteristic of the transmission.

I'm asking because I am deciding between the 2008 VW Jetta SE and the Jetta Wolfsburg Edition. The SE has 3MODE CLKUP and the Wolfsburg Edition has 3MODE.

I do have some knowledge of cars, also, just not very much.
