  1. Canadian football is very similar to American football.  People who aren't sports fans or sports fans who aren't Canadian or American would probably not pick up on the differences.

The Canadian field is much wider.  Also, from goal line to goal line is 110 yards, instead of 100 yards.  The end zone in Canada is 20 yards deep instead of 10 and the goals are on the goal line (at the front of the end zone) instead of the end line (at the back).

Canadian football has 3 downs to make 10 yards as opposed to American football's 4 downs. (although it has been joked that Canadian football does have 4 downs, but they always punt on 3rd down just to be safe)

One big unique thing in Canadian football is the single (or rouge).  If a team receiving a kick (a kick off, punt, or field goal attempt) does not return the ball out of their end zone, the kicking team is awarded 1 point and the receiving team gets the ball at their own 35 yard line.

It's a cool game. ESPN used to show it in the US back in the 80s.  During an NFL strike, the major networks showed the games.  There was an expansion of the Canadian Football League to US cities back in the 90s.  A US team (Baltimore - who's NFL team had left about 10 years earlier) did win the Grey Cup (championship).  But the NFL had another team move to Baltimore and the CFL retreated back to within their borders.  (Sorry to have seen them go).

  6. Canadian football is comparable to American altough with quite a few differences  Some notable differences are:

12 men on offence and defence(as opposed to 11 in NFL

    3 downs(instead of 4)

field is 110 yds long (as opposed to 100 in NFL)

Championship is called the Grey Cup first played in 1909

Up until the mid 60s, players were given comparable salaries to the NFL

8 teams from BC to Quebec, US Expansion in mid 90s (notable being Baltimore winning first/onlyAmerican team to win Grey Cup)  Baltimore was all American players, as opposed to Canadian clubs which have quotas for Canadian and American players

Some of the pro football records that until now were broken in the NFL were set initially in the CFL (Career rushing yards and Passing yards)

Some notable CFL players and coaches who were in/still playing in the NFL include Warren Moon, Jeff Garcia, Doug Flutie and Merv Levy

The most popular teams include: Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Eskimos, BC Lions and the Toronto Argonauts
