What is Carnivale in Brazil like?

I live in the US and one of my good friends is Brazilian and wants me and a couple of my buddies (we're all in our mid 20s) to go with him to Carnivale this Feb. Basically, we would go for a week. I only get 2 weeks of vacation per year. So, before I book my ticket, I want to make sure this is a worthwhile way to spend my vacation. In other words, I want to have a wild experience that I will remember the rest of my life.

What is it like? Is it extremely fun, or what? Have you been?

  1. Brazil is always worthwhile specially in Rio.

Does that help ? If not, let me know so I can make some more research on your behalf, ok. Good luck.

  2. My boyfriend is from Brazil and has been there during Carnivale. It is basically a huge week of partying. Anything could and probably will happen. think Mardi Gras times 1000.

  3. I'd rather skip Carnival just for the reaosn that it is all packed and people get crazy, and you cant have a good look of the country properly. And things get really expensive and if you dont have good seats for Sambodromo it;s not worth it. I;ve gone to New Years though, and it is much, much better than carnival. And about being fun, Brazil is fun all year long so I;d choose another date to go and better enjoy Rio and the rest of the country.

  4. Carnival it´s a popular party held all over Brazil...people dance in streets, in clubs...wheat ever they can.

It´s super worthwhile, if you like parties and getting crazy (especially if you are on mid 20´s)!!!

It´ll starts (officially) at Friday before ash Wednesday, and ends at fat Tuesday...for 2008 will be on Feb 2nd to Feb 5th.

All foreigners friend that I have, who´s I invite for it, told me they had their time of life in Carnival...and all of then returned at least once for it.

  5. i´d say skip rio and salvador (too commercial) and go to small cities in minas gerais, where there´s street carnival, lots of young, good looking people and partying 24/7. ouro preto and diamantina are great options. carnival in rio is for old people.

  6. Carnaval officially runs from Saturday to Tuesday prior to Lent Wednesday. In some places, notably Salvador, there's lots of run-up activity. The most famous phenomenon is the parade in Rio de Janeiro. Other popular venues are Salvador, with its roaming sound trucks, and the hillside town of Olinda with its street party.
