Catsup, also known as ketchup, is many things to many people.

When the American colonizers introduced catsup to Filipinos, the brand Del Monte Tomato Catsup became an instant nationwide hit.

By the 1960s, after the peso-dollar exchange rate had doubled, and imported items were slapped with tariffs, the price of a bottle of Del Monte Tomato Catsup becae prohibitive for ordinary Filipinos.

At the same time, the Philippines was starting to develop a flourishing banana export industry, utilizing vast open land adjacent to a penal colony in Mindanao (and the prisoners for cheap labor).

Someone came up with the brilliant idea of converting overripe, mis-shapen, oversized, undersized bananas into a sauce that almost looks and tastes like Del Monte catsup. The most popular fried chicken restaurant shain in Manila shifted to the cheaper banana catsup, which had started to be sold in bottles resembling Del Monte's.

Today, banana catsup sales have zoomed and left behind the tomato catsups in the market.

this is a sauce that is made from tomatoes. It is also said as ketchup. It may be sweet, sour or both sweet and sour. Ketchup or catsup is a good source of lycopene and is delicious to mix with other foods too.

A spicy,semi sweet/vinegary, thick tomato condiment, not sauce really, for dipping, french fries especially, and as adjunct to complement things like chili mac, taco meat, etc.  It is bottled to be easy to pour out in increments, however, yuk, yuk, the first couple of shakes out of the bottle are usually long in coming. LOL

By the way, I think the spelling and pronounciation catsup=cats-up, is gross.  In the U.S. it is ketchup=catch-up!
