What is Catwoman's story?

I always assumed that Catwoman was a villain and a thief. But it seems that she has had some romantic involvement with Batman. What actually happened to her and is she a hero or villain?

She's a bit of both. She's had a tough life and been through hard times. If you want a detailed background you should read her book, "Catwoman: the visual guide to the feline fatale". It's by Scott Beatty. Its a great read.
