  1. Chemistry is the study of matter on the most basic level, and its interactions with other matter and forms of energy. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. So anything that is matter is made up of chemicals: a piece of wood, your body, table salt, air, aluminum, etc. In scientific terms, things that are real but are not matter or chemicals would be forms of energy: Heat, light, electricity, sound, etc. In philosophical terms, other things that are real but are neither matter nor energy would be things like ideas, morals, mathematics, etc.
