  1. DOS stands for disk operating system

is it dead? nop its not, its still alive and installed on your windows xp even vista known as cmd or command (lower version)

hit start > hit run > then type cmd or command

It looks quite cool and sorta matrix-y.?

yup i think so, i still use it to write documents using the older version of wordperfect or wordstar in my laptop to avoid too much power consumption

  2. Its just the original stripped down version of computer operating systems, it brings back memories of the olden days,

  3. In a windows environment when you click on icons and pictures to perform tasks, what happens is that certain commands are run into the "kernel" and executed to perform a task as specified. The icons were used coz people dont seem to remember most commands.

Dos is like a windows without the graphics. You have to know the commands to get a job done. eg 'cd' to open folders 'attrib' to read attributes. There are many commands and you can search them even in the net.

By the way, u can also write programmes in the dos mode. e.g try typing edit. In the blue screen that appears type mkdir test

save the file as test.exe and save it to drive C. In your windows mode you will c the file. Double click it n c wat happens.

    Enjoy!

  4. DOS is disk operating system. Its other than moving files, formatting a hard drive, or running IP commands. You really don't get a lot of use out of dos today. The original windows 3x was a gui that ran dos commands.
